  2. INSTRUCTOR BLOCKS  STUDENT’S  COUNTER STRIKE
  3. TRAINING REFLEXES BY GROUPING  OF  MOVES
  4. ADVANCED DELIVERY OF BLOWS

  1. ADVANCED DELIVERY OF BLOWS

They are more intricate and elaborate strikes and goes beyond that which is required in basic training. The grandmaster did not teach this as a basic move. These blows are not usually encouraged in basic training due to the innate danger of the target areas and the danger of accidental injury. These are used in combat situations. Besides, students tend to forget the important basic training skills in favor of dangerous scoring points during club sparring sessions.

  1. STRIKE NUMBER 1

    - Execute the basic strike number 1 blow.
    - This is followed by a left to right upward slashing strike, blade first in the machete concept as described earlier.
    COUNTER:
    - Block first blow as in basic block.
    - Block the second strike with a downward block on the stick.
Withdraw your right foot as you execute the block, point of your stick facing downward. The arm, he pushes student’s stick towards student’s right side to deliver thrust number 11.
    - Instructor places his right hand (palm up) on top of student’s right hand to control (tanday) and delivers a left hand punch into student’s abdomen (over his stick).
    - Student counters the left hand punch by a downward parry with his left hand and arm and simultaneously pulls his stick down and out to release it from the controlling hand of the instructor to deliver strike number 1.
    - Instructor blocks, controls and delivers thrust number 11. He then controls with his left and lays his right hand on top student’s stick (tanday) to control. He then delivers an immediate left uppercut on student’s right rib cage below student’s right elbow.
    - Student blocks instructor’s uppercut with a downward block with his right elbow.

  1. STRIKE NUMBER 2

    - Execute basic strike number 2.
    - Follow with right to left upward swing (palm up and blade first), following the machete/bolo strike concept.

    COUNTER:
    - Execute the basic block to strike number 2.
    - Block the second blow with a right to left downward block, and then withdraw the left foot.

  • STRIKENUMBER 3 - Same as basic strike

    - Then strike 4 and back to strike 3

    COUNTER:
    - Block strike as in basic block of strike 3, weight mostly on
withdrawn right foot, face the blow.
    - Quickly turn your body and left shoulder facing the blow to block strike 4
    - Quickly reverse body rotation to face right again with block strike on strike number 3

  • STRIKENUMBER 4 - Same as basic strike

    a. Shift weight then deliver strike 3, shift weight and back to deliver strike 4

    COUNTER:
    b. Basic block to strike number 4, weight on withdrawn left foot.
    c. Quickly rotate body and right shoulder to face right and simultaneously block strike number 3
    d. Quickly reverse body position by facing left again to block strike number

STRIKENUMBER 5 - Thrust to the solar plexus

    - Face the stick point up and proceed with a thrust to the throat
    - Follow with an upward slashing left to right strike to the groin, blade first, following machete/bolo concept.
    - Follow with another upward palm up slashing right to left strike to the groin, blade first.

    COUNTER:
    a. Block first thrust as in the basic block, with scooping left hand
    b. Block second thrust by moving right and forward, pushing his stick with your stick; point up away from your throat with the back of your left hand
    c. Control stick with the left hand and deliver strike number 1.

    - Block the upward left to right slashing strike with a downward left to right blocking strike;
    - Make an offensive counter by making an upward right to left thrust to the abdomen or throat.
    - Block the right to left upward slashing strike with a left to right downward blocking strike.
    - Make a counter offensive of making a ripping right to left upward thrust to the abdomen or throat...
    - Block the right to left upward slashing strike with a left to right downward blocking strike.
    - Make a counter offensive of making a ripping right to left upward thrust to abdomen or throat.

STRIKE NUMBER 6 - Swing the thrust from left to right with a ripping thrust (cabra) instead of a straight thrust. The stick ends at the right shoulder in a ready position.

    COUNTER:
    - If far, weave back and right to avoid the thrust, then move in to control and block any other offensive move. Deliver strike number 1 as stick passes on head or wrist.
    - If close, move in and lean right. Push his stick in an umbrella defense, the point of your stick pointing left. Allow his stick to flow over to your left (paawas) as you guide it with your left hand to control. Deliver strike number 1.
    Alternatively:
After umbrella defense, instead of striking, drop on your left knee, push your left elbow above his left knee and drag his left heel toward you for a take down.

STRIKE NUMBER 7 Ripping thrust (cabra) from right to left instead of the basic straight thrust. The thrust ends at the left elbow in ready position.

    COUNTER:
    - If far, weave back and to your left to avoid the thrust. Then move in and left to avoid any further offensive move, such as a reverse strike number 6. Strike with strike number 2 on head or wrist as stick passes.
    - If close or near, 1) using umbrella defense (point of your stick point left), step forward and in, duck your head; catch his stick and swing to your right (sapwang and paawas) or if more convenient, slide his stick to your left. Proceed to deliver strike number 1.

If very close or near, duck your head down and right. Do preemptive open palms jab on his left shoulder or to opponent's throat. Drop on you left knee and do a left leg take down by driving your left forearm above his left knee and dragging his left foot along the floor toward you.

Strike number 8 - With the momentum for strike number 7,
Bend your knees drop your right shoulders to deliver basic blow number

Strike number 9 - Same as basic strike.

Strike number 10 - Swing stick from left to right with a ripping thrust (cabra) with the stick resting on your right shoulder at the end of the strike.

    COUNTER:
    a. If far, weave back and right to avoid thrust. Strike number 1 as stick passes.
    b. If close, move in and right. Use umbrella defense (point of your stick pointing left), slide his stick (paawas) to your left and deliver strike number 1

STRIKE NUMBER 11 - Swing stick from right to left with a
ripping thrust (cabra). At the end of the thrust, the stick ends on the left arm.

    COUNTER:
    - If far, weave back and left to avoid thrust. Then rush in, if there is a come back thrust with strike number 10 or 2 Strike a preemptive blow number 2 on head or hit wrist.
    - If close, step in to your right and forward before the thrust. Use umbrella defense, the point of your stick point left. With your left hand palm up, lift and clear his stick and hand to your right (sapwang/paawas). Deliver strike number 1 or “S” strike to the right side of his head. (Face right, weight on your left foot).

STRIKE NUMBER 12 - From strike number 11, proceed to strike number 2, then to strike number 1 or Strike number 1, then number 2 (“V” Strike, use wrist action), then proceed to number 12.

    COUNTER:
    - Catch fist and parry to your right (paawas), as you simultaneously strike the wrist in a left to right slashing blow. Use body twist and weight shift for optimum power.
    - If step (a ) doesn’t get him then step in left and forward and strike a number 2 left to right slashing blow to the wrist or head.
    - If steps (a. and b.) do not get him, shift your weight to the right and do a slashing right to left strike to the wrist or head.
    - The counter to a “V” strike would simply be a wrist action of changing directions.

    DEFENSE FOR LEFT-HANDED:

    - Block with umbrella block; control and grab his wrist and jerk to your left - then deliver strike number 1. OR:
    - Still using umbrella defense, upon contact, grab his wrist and jerk it to your left. Simultaneously slide your stick as in a modified and flat number 2 strike.
    - If steps (a. or b. do not get him and he proceeds to a number 2 strike, which be from your left to your right, do a slashing right to left strike on his wrist or head.
    - If steps (a, b., and c.) do not get him, step in left and forward and do a slashing left to right strike on his head or wrist.
