PART  I
DEFENSIVE   STAGE

  1. WARM-UP EXERCISES
  2. STARTING POSITION
  3. GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND DRILLS
  4. PROPER DELIVERY OF TWELVE BASIC STRIKES
  1. PARRYING OF THE 12 BASIC STRIKES
  2. INSTRUCTOR BLOCKS  STUDENT’S  COUNTER STRIKE
  3. TRAINING REFLEXES BY GROUPING  OF  MOVES
  4. ADVANCED DELIVERY OF BLOWS
  1. INSTRUCTOR BLOCKS STUDENT’S COUNTER STRIKE

  1. Student parries and delivers counterblow to instructor’s strike number 1 -

  1. With his right foot forward, the instructor blocks student’s stick with the point of instructor’s stick pointing upward. The instructor simultaneously controls the student’s stick (near the butt on top of his left hand).

  2. The instructor exercises control to avoid a wild, unintentional and unexpected blow or move by the student. This is also done to slow the students response thereby giving a chance to guide the student’s hand in parrying. It is very important for the instructor to get a feel for the student’s movement.

  3. In this position, the instructor releases his left hand control of the student’s stick as he proceeds to deliver strike number 2 (a slashing blow, left to right, palm down). Instructor makes a sidestep to the left.

  1. Student blocks and delivers counterblow to strike number 2 -

  1. The instructor’s left foot is withdrawn as he simultaneously blocks student’s stick with his stick pointing upward. The instructor controls the student’s stick (on top and toward the end) with his left hand for the same purpose discussed in 1b above i.e., to avoid wild blows and to slacken or slow down response, insuring control.

  2. Instructor guides student’s stick to his right side (sapwang). This is done by shifting his left hand control to face palm up, (inserted between the cross of the sticks and student’s hand) then lifting student’s stick to his right side making sure it clears instructor’s head.

  3. Simultaneously, he delivers strike number 3 and makes a sidestep with his left foot.

  1. Student parries and delivers a counterblow to instructor’s strike number 3 -

  1. The instructor withdraws his left foot further left andblocks student’s stick with his stick.

  2. The instructor controls students stick with his left hand. Control point will be toward the end of the student’s stick from point of contact.

  3. The instructor guides the student’s stick with the back of his right hand over the instructor’s head as he delivers strike number 4. Instructor’s foot remains withdrawn to the back.

  1. Student parries and delivers counterblow to strike number 4 -

  1. The instructor with his right foot forward, blocks the student’s stick with his stick.

  2. Theinstructor controls thestudent’s stick near the grip or butt of the stick.

  3. From this position, the instructor releases control with his left hand and shifts control. With his palm facing down, he lifts the student’s stick with the back of his left hand and arm. Make sure the student’s stick is controlled by instructor’s forefinger and thumb as this move has the tendency to hit the instructor’s face.

  4. Instructor delivers strike number 5 (a thrust to the abdomen) with his left foot stepping forward.

  5. Student delivers counter to strike number 5 as in paragraph E.5.

  1. Student parries and delivers counterblow number 5 -

  1. The instructor, with his left foot still forward, blocks student’s stick with his stick.

  2. With his left hand , the instructor controls students stick (his hand toward the end of the stick from point of contact). The instructors weight on his right foot.

  3. The instructors releases control of his left hand and delivers counterblow number 6 (thrust to below student’s right nipple) as he withdraws his left foot but with his weight on his right foot.

  4. Student blocks the thrust and delivers his counterblow as described in paragraph E.6.

  1. Student blocks and delivers the counterblow to instructors thrust in Strike number 6 -

  1. The instructor& blocks the student’s stick with his stick and controls the stick (toward the end of the students stick from point of contact as in parrying strike number 2 (See paragraph E.2). The instructor’s left foot is steady at the back

  2. Instructor releases control by his left hand and pushes the stick towards the student’s chest, as if to pin his stick on his chest. Instructor simultaneously delivers strike number 7 (a thrust below student’s left nipple). Instructor simultaneously side-steps with his left foot with his body weight shifting to his left foot).

  3. Student blocks and counters as in paragraph E.7).

  1. Student blocks and delivers his counterblow to instructor’s strike number 7 (a thrust below student’s right nipple).

  1. Instructor parries the counterblow as in strike number 1 (See E.1).

  2. Instructor releases control of the student’s stick and bends his knees, body straight to deliver strike number 8, a slashing strike to his left knee. Bending over will allow opponent to grab the hair, punch the face or poke the eyes.

  3. Student steps forward with his right foot and bends his knees, making sure not to bend over as previously explained, that is, to avoid being grabbed by the hair, punched on the face or poked in the eye.

  4. Student blunts the blow by blocking the instructor’s hand (not the stick) near the butt, with his palm heel as detailed in paragraph E.8 and strikes instructor with strike number 1.

  1. Student parries and delivers his counter to instructors strike number 8 -

  1. Instructor parries student’s counterblow as in counters to strike numbers 1 and 4.

EXCEPT: The instructor has to lower his body by bending his knees to parry the blow effectively. His left foot remains at the back and his body weight is mostly on his right foot.

  2. The instructor releases control by his left hand, pivots facing oblique left on his bent knees, back straight to avoid grab, punch or eye poking as earlier explained.

  3. Instructor slips his left hand palm up and flips (sapwang) student’s stick to his right side (carefully avoiding not to catch his head with the student’s stick) as he proceeds to deliver strike number 9.

  4. Student on bent knees, head up as earlier explained, blocks strike number 9, as in paragraph E.9.

  1. Student blocks and delivers counterblow to strike number 9 -

  1. Instructor blocks and delivers counterblow as in paragraph E.3.

EXCEPT:   That instructor does this move with more pronounced bent knees, left foot still in a side step position to the left.

  2. Instructor in this blocking position releases control by his left hand, stands up, withdraws his left foot, weight mostly on his right foot, pulls his left shoulder back and delivers blow number 10 (a thrust to the right eye).

NOTE: As earlier explained, practice safety by delivering blow outside the head area to avoid accidental injury to the eye.

  3. Student blocks the thrust as in blocking strike number 2, except that instructor’s left foot is still at the back, with his weight mostly on his right foot.

  1. Student blocks and delivers counterblow to the number 10 thrust to the right eye -

  1. The instructor blocks the counterblow as in blocking strike number 2, except that instructor’s left foot is still withdrawn with his body weight is mostly on his right foot.

  2. The instructor from this blocking position, releases control by his left hand and pushes student’s stick with his left hand to pin the stick on student’s chest and proceeds to deliver strike number 11 (a thrust to student’s left eye). AGAIN PRACTICE SAFETY. Instructor side steps left and forward as he deliver the thrust.

  3. Student blocks the thrust as in blocking strike number 1.

  1. Student blocks and delivers counterblow to instructors number 11 thrust.

  1. The instructor blocks the counterblow as if countering strike number 2. Except that his left foot remains in that forward, oblique side step position.

  2. Instructor firmly pushes student’s stick downward to make clearance for a number 12 hammer blow to the head.

  1. Student blocks instructor’s hand and proceeds with the defense as in E.12. Student proceeds to deliver a similar strike number 12.

  1. The instructor proceeds to close and control student’s stick.

NOTE:

  1. The lesson on blocking the counterblow of the student by the instructor should be repeated in an orderly sequence, that is, from 1 to 12, over and over until mastered and ingrained in the student’s reflexes and muscle memory.

  2. Then the instructor delivers blows and thrusts at random, that is, out of sequence and not in the numerical order as outlined above.

  3. After acquiring the skill, speed and correct execution of the lessons in the immediate preceding chapter, the student  can proceed to TRAINING REFLEXES BY GROUPING OF MOVEMENTS.
